Government Digitalization
Pioneering Digital Innovation for a Brighter Tomorrow
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), under the leadership of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, is on a journey to revolutionize its landscape and infrastructure by aiming to become a digital government.
The Prime Ministerās commitment is ongoing towards transforming the KRG into a leading digital government in the Middle East by 2025 according to its Digital Transformation Strategy.
Strategic Developments
The KRG has come a significant way in its efforts to digitalize itās government operations and infrastructure. The first Kurdish internet domain (.KRD) is an example of the Kurdistani communityās digital identity as part of a series to build this much-needed infrastructure.
Under the personal supervision of Prime Minister Barzani, The Department of Information Technology (DIT) was established as a means to centralize all data collection and service provisions that are related to this endeavor. Encompassing around 400 digitalized and modernized services, the DIT acts as the cornerstone for a more digitalized Kurdistan.
The introduction of digitalized and electronic systems such as the first Electronic Visa Issuance program and the Business Registration System, alongside others like the Citizens' Complaint System and the Payroll Schedule Management System are clear examples of a targeted approach to simplify and streamline public services that pertain to citizensā lives and reduce bureaucratic obstacles.
Other digital and electronic systems like the MyAccount Project and the extensive taxpayer system are aimed at a forward-looking approach to streamline governmental interactions for its citizens and businesses alike.
Enhancing Public Services
and
User Experience
Key public services have undergone a digital transformation, such as the Electronic Driving Licence program, Government Expenditure Controls, and the Population Information System, aiming to make internations and the affairs of citizens easier, more accessible, and user friendly. The establishment of the Unique Personal Number (UPN) and the creation of the DIT are prime examples of a more connected and more efficient government.
Other digitalized services include but are not limited to:
- Accessible information management system
- Border traffic management system
- The Digital form system
- A biometric information system
Future Outlook and Commitments
The cornerstone of this expansive digitalized infrastructure was laid with Prime Minister Barzaniās vision through the Digital Transformation Strategy, setting the stage for a future in which public and governmental services are streamlined, made more transparent, and efficient. As the KRG advances towards its goal of becoming a regional GovTech powerhouse by 2025, the foundation laid by the current digital advancements and strategic investments positions the Kurdistan Region not only as a leader in digital governance but also as a future hub of innovation and technological advancements in the Middle East.
